Think Sparkless

Of course, Hollywood (a.k.a. Tinsel town) has always been big on shimmer. This season all that glitters must be pink—dresses that are part fairy, with yards of tulle (Kylie Minogue), or more womanly, with a curvy or even classical silhouette. (Brittany Murphy, Dido). From whispery pales to deeper, more assertive shades, the look calls for just “a hint of shimmer,” says Monique Lhuillier, who designed Holly Robinson Peete’s flamingo sheath. “It looks lighter and fresher.” The effect? Intoxicating. “The dress made me feel happy and sparkly,” exults Robinson Peete. Sort of like sipping (pink) champagne….

Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall aced the style competition at an Aug. 25 fete marking the first night of the U.S. Open in New York. Wearing a sophisticated Missoni Lurex knit top and white Sonia Rykiel trousers, Cattrall (who chose a bag and shoes by Jimmy Choo) looked cool and polished—perfect for an evening under the bright lights.

STAR SHINE: The ultimate in fast fixes for your hair? Silken-tressed stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Elizabeth Hurley are hooked on the gloss cloth from their London stylist, Umberto Giannini. A single-use wipe to smooth over a finished do, it debuted in London last year and launches in the U.S. this month. Selling for $1.99 at Rite Aid, it’s cheaper than a blowout and lots more portable.

MODEL BEHAVIOR: Jennifer Aniston, Allison Janney Gwyneth Paltrow: Sheen to go. and other stars hit the catwalk on Aug. 19 to model Robert Ellis designs at a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. How hard was it to walk the walk beside pros like Cindy Crawford? “I had to go to a fitting with supermodels, and there’s nothing worse for your self-esteem than being half-naked in a room with a bunch of tall models,” confesses Jennifer Love Hewitt. “I’m still not over it.”

PROP GUY: It’s Roberto Cavalli’s world—we just live in it. This month the designer launches both his fragrance, Roberto Cavalli Man, and a line of chic pillows. Seems pals loved the toss pillows in his home so much that they nabbed them as souvenirs; Lenny Kravitz was so smitten that he custom-ordered 100. Cavalli then decided to sell the groovy pillows at Bergdorf Goodman, so the rest of us could do our lounging (or seducing?) in style.

DVF, beyond the little wrap dress

A style star since Studio 54, Diane von Furstenberg has launched her first-ever beauty collection—a line that reflects her devotion to simplicity. “Edited but glamorous,” in her words, the makeup is grouped into flattering basics—browns, pinks, reds and corals—that “aren’t so serious and dark as other lines.” Highlights include the Glamour Compact ($75), a go-to item for lips, eyes and cheeks; cosmetic and travel bags and a fragrance called “D.” (How’s that for paring down?)

Summer Ease

Heather Locklear and other stars are rediscovering sexy scarf-style tops—sweet handkerchief prints, as well as status silks. Paired with white pants, they suggest “hippie chic,” says Halle Berry‘s stylist Dawn Haynes. “Plus, they’re light to pack.” (We can dig it….)

Eye Design

When it comes to symbolic jewelry, Madonna, J.Lo and other celebs are focusing on eyeballs. What do they see in the odd baubles? “This is an ancient custom in Greece, where the eye is a protection from negative forces,” explains designer Ileana Makri. (Perfect for the bodyguard’s day off.)
