How Tweed It Is

It’s an old-world fabric, associated with the British hare-and-hound crowd—none of whom you’ll likely find on Hollywood’s red carpet. But lately tweed is being woven into the wardrobes of veddy stylish celebs like Nicole Kidman and Angie Harmon, who prefer their clothes contemporary but classic. From knee length flared skirts to jaunty cabbie caps, “designers are playing on the nostalgic, aristocratic feel of tweed, the Englishness,” says Andrew Bolton, an associate curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. “I like it because it’s conservative and sexy,” says actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. Now that’s one tweedy bird.

Halle Berry and Oscar de la Renta Bonded over her frock for the London premiere of Die Another Day. “Halle looked regal,” the designer says of Berry, who wore his $9,000 embroidered satin gown. “Her radiance made the dress more beautiful.”

GOBBLE-DAY GOOK: This Thanksgiving celebs are feasting on a plethora of products featuring ingredients ripped off from Turkey Day. Pamela Anderson is a fan of Ayur.Medic’s Pumpkin Exfoliant, Brandy is big on Get Fresh Spa’s Wild Yam & Primrose Oil Bath Salts, while Charlize Theron craves Burt’s Bees Marshmallow Vanishing Creme. Could Snapple Cranberry Raspberry conditioner be far behind?…

HAIR-MAIL EXPRESS: Liv Tyler ships monthly samples of her curls to tress expert Tina Cassaday. Cassaday, who was touted to Tyler by pal Penélope Cruz, has Tyler’s vitamin-depleted mane (the result of washing with well water) on a moisture-replenishing program. It includes overnight applications of Cassa-day’s Banana Conditioner and rubbing ice cubes over the hair from root to tip—a must, I hear, for closing the cuticle and leaving hair shiny and smooth….

AMAZINGLY EXPENSIVE GRACE: Obviously, price was no object for Will & Grace‘s fanciful Nov. 21 nuptials. Consider the loaner Martin Katz diamonds aglow on Debra Messing: a 3-carat Asscher-cut engagement ring ($65,000), rose-cut diamond earrings ($70,000), a diamond bracelet ($25,000) and diamond barrette ($28,000). Then there’s the $1,750 Sergio Rossi boots the bride sports under her $20,000 Vera Wang gown. Who does Grace think she is, J.Lo?

Baby Phat designer Kimora Lee Simmons and singer Kelis shone at separate events in Roberto Cavalli’s hand-beaded mini-dress. Twinkle, twinkle!

They grow on you

Shaggy chic? Stars like Kelly Preston and Kirsten Dunst are leaving their bangs long “on purpose,” says celeb stylist Oribe. “It’s a sexy, rocker look that needs to be trimmed often.” Someone should shear the news with Daryl Hannah. “Too long is when they’re past your eyes and annoying,” Oribe explains. Ah, now we see.

Groom Service

“Women are the conduit to helping guys look better,” says NBC’s Today style contributor Lloyd Boston. To help answer the clothes calls of fashion-challenged males, Boston has penned Make Over Your Man, a guide for the ladies who love them. Following Boston’s blueprint, Tyra Banks tossed her dad’s dated duds, while designer Cynthia Rowley put pal Alan Cumming in snazzy stripes. After all, a stylish man is the best accessory.

Bomber Away!

Forget Top Gun‘s worn leather look. Today’s bomber jacket combines “elements of ’80s style with twists like bold colors and metallic fabrics,” says a rep from Miss Sixty, maker of Lisa Ling‘s jacket. “It’s also more fitted, which is sexy.”
