At Arm’s Length

The long and short of it: Spring’s most stylish stars are cropping up in three-quarter-length sleeves

Graceful Exposure

Like crocuses come spring, sleeves inch up as the weather gets warmer. But this year, fashionistas are stopping short of short sleeves, choosing instead the three-quarter-length variety. Beloved by chic icons Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, the just-below-the-elbow style is now cropping up everywhere, from day wear to evening wear, from Versace to Gap. “They’re clean, uncomplicated classic,” explains Hollywood fashion stylist Arianne Phillips, who dresses Madonna and Courtney Love. Vows Boy Meets World’s Danielle Fishel: “I’m going to be living in them this summer.”

Reason: They’re flattering on everyone. Covering the upper arm but not the wrist “makes your hands and fingers look longer and more elegant,” says L.A. designer Elisabetta Rogiani, a favorite of Alyssa Milano, Tori Spelling and Pamela Anderson Lee. “It’s camouflage for fat arms,” explains fan Drew Barry-more. Perhaps most important for Hollywood royalty, the exposed wrist provides a perfect showcase for “the fabulous bracelet you spent a fortune on,” says Tracey Ross, owner of the West Hollywood boutique where actresses Kate Hudson and Jennifer Aniston shop. Or a perfect excuse to hie thee to Harry Winston.
