Wings of Desire

Some fashion trends, for whatever reason, catch on with the speed of an ambling caterpillar. Others instantly send celeb hearts aflutter. Clearly butterflies are among the latter. Suddenly turning up everywhere—from Drew Barrymore‘s lapel [1] to Minnie Driver’s locks [3]—the insects have, in Hollywood, come out of their cocoons. “The minute you put something on like that, you associate it with delicacy,” says Taia Adalbert, designer for Johnny Loves Rosie (Gwyneth Paltrow wears their accessories). Adds fellow wing-nut Basia Zarzycka, whose London shop is stocked with butterfly shoes and hats: “We love anything mystical. It’s a return, to femininity.” Still, Jennifer Tilly [7], who took flight in Dolce & Gabbana at the Godzilla premiere, insists the look isn’t too precious. “Butterflies aren’t as girlie as flowers,” she says. “They’re bugs, after all.”
