Piling It On

So many of today’s fashion “dos” started out as “don’ts”: see-through dresses, silver nail polish and now, sloppy hair. With chignons no longer chic, and just-so bouffants suddenly just so day-before-yesterday, Hollywood hair has become big, upswept and about as kempt as a palm tree post-El Niño. “Too perfect is passé,” says L.A.’s Laurent D., coiffeur to Téa Leoni and Uma Thurman. “Slightly messy and undone is what’s chic.” Indeed, the updo on Baywatch’s Donna D’Errico at a January fashion show resembled a ripe pineapple; Alicia Silverstone, the titan of tendrils, has lately seemed to be mimicking Medusa. For some, though, the look isn’t just fashion. “I’ve been working so much, I haven’t washed my hair in days,” said Sabrina, the Teenage Witch’s Melissa Joan Hart at last month’s NAACP Image Awards in Pasadena. “My updo is really an excuse for greasy hair.”
