“It makes me feel like a streak of sunshine in the night,” Sunset Beach’s Laura Harring says of orange, the hot hue of summer. Even Courtney Love, Kim Basinger and Baywatch’s Traci Bingham have stepped out looking like poster girls for the Florida Citrus Commission. Orange “makes you feel bold and wild,” says The Bold and the Beautiful’s Hunter Tylo, who wore a tangerine-tint Patricia Miles dress to a preparty for May’s Daytime Emmys. “It puts me in a good mood.” Adds Hollywood fashion stylist Karin Labby, who recently put Party of Five’s Jennifer Love Hewitt in the color: “It’s fashion at its most fun and playful. It’s like you are a big, gorgeous piece of fruit come to life.”

A noble goal, to be sure. But there’s more: “Because it’s a hot color, it creates a stir and excites,” says designer Vivienne Tarn, whose clients include Mira Sorvino and Lauren Holly. “A little orange goes a long way. It draws attention to itself and the person who wears it.” That can sometimes come in handy, says designer Betsey Johnson: “It has that ‘Don’t run me over’ kind of look. Aren’t construction men still wearing orange?”
