NORTHPORT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Northport, N.Y.

Students at Northport High were heartbroken as they witnessed their beloved biology teacher David Deutsch lose the ability to walk and talk after being diagnosed in 2004 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. “It was so hard to watch,” says Chris Lynch, 23, an ’05 graduate. “We wanted to help.” He and 15 other students started A Midwinter Night’s Dream (amnd.org), a nonprofit through which they’ve raised $1.5 million for ALS research. They also visit patients-none more often than Deutsch, 42, a married dad of two now in a nursing home. “I’ll be down in the dumps, and then I hear a knock on the door,” he says through a computer-assisted device. “They give me hope.”
