Five years ago Hollywood talent agent Jim Toth lost his father to lung cancer. What he describes as the most “devastating” time in his life was followed by a “very healing experience” when he met wife Reese Witherspoon, 37, “the best thing that ever happened to me,” he tells PEOPLE. With the support of some famous friends (“I think I owe everyone in Hollywood a favor!” he joked), Toth, 43, threw a star-studded fund-raiser for Stand Up to Cancer, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, and announced a lung cancer research grant in honor of his dad. Onstage, a boisterous Jamie Foxx got celebs and doctors alike dancing. The event, emceed by Conan O’Brien and produced by Yifat Oren (who planned Witherspoon and Toth’s wedding), also inaugurated a $20 million partnership with the American Cancer Society.
