KATE & WILL IN NEW ZEALAND

April 9-14

Cheers! Princess Kate and Prince William toured the Amisfield vineyard in Queenstown, where “the duchess was more interested in the gardening,” says owner John Darby. “She seemed quite knowledgeable in the pruning of the vines.”

ROYAL ROMPER ROOM

The first stop on Prince George’s first official tour? A group playdate sponsored by the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society at Government House in Wellington. “It’s madness, there are babies everywhere!” said proud father Will. After watching his 9-month-old son (whom one onlooker called “a bruiser”) play front and center with 10 other babies his age, Will referred to the future king as a “prop forward,” a rugby position for strong and sturdy types. Other parents at the event recognized the little prince’s penchant for power—especially during playtime. “He is bubbly, quite feisty, and he took control,” dad Grant Collinge said. “He owned the place.”

Charting Kate’s Pregnancy Rumors

PREGNANT

NOT PREGNANT

APRIL 10

Hiding anything? Wearing a belted Alexander McQueen coat, Kate held a clutch over her tummy.

APRIL 12

Will tells a woman who made George a shawl she “might have to make another one.”

APRIL 13

Then again … Kate didn’t abstain from sampling a red vintage at the Amisfield winery and told the winemaker she didn’t drink while she was pregnant with George.

APRIL 13

It seems unlikely that a pregnant princess would ride in a jet boat—an excursion deemed off-limits for expectant moms due to high speeds and 360° spins.

APRIL 13

Could her stomach be any flatter? Kate’s Jonathan Saunders sweater and skinny jeans (worn for a kids’ rugby match) deepen doubts.

APRIL 14

A Maori chief drums up desire for another mini royal, bidding the couple to “increase” the family.

THE VERDICT

At the moment Kate’s keeping mum about when she plans on becoming a second-time mum. As Will has said, “One’s enough for now.”

ROYALS AT PLAY

Whether on land or by sea, the new parents reveal one of the keys to their happy marriage is a little healthy competition

In Christchurch to promote the Cricket World Cup, Will pitched several balls past his wife (and one nearly hit her!).

Kate bid her husband “take care!” before casting off to race against him in a 31-ft. yacht. (Note: She won.)

Skipper Dean Barker said Will “did not mind lending a hand getting the sails up. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty.”

Onlookers take sides during Kate and Will’s yacht race in Auckland.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK

DOWN UNDER WITH WILLIAM & KATE

When I first covered Prince William Down Under in July 2005, he was a 23-year-old university graduate touring New Zealand with the British rugby team. At school he’d met a certain Kate Middleton, with whom he shared a love of sports and the outdoors.

Now, nine years later, Will and Kate are livening up the royal tour with displays of their athletic prowess—and their friendly but fierce rivalry. First, Kate thrashed Will racing America’s Cup yachts. (The princess even gave her husband a winking salute as she sailed past him to victory.) Primed for payback, Will bested his wife coaching a kids’ tag-rugby match, pumping his fist in the air. Watching Will bowl cricket balls at Kate as she gamely took the bat—in towering heels no less!—I was reminded how the couple joked that their Scrabble games usually ended in a squabble.

But behind the all-in-fun one-upmanship, friends and royal watchers say, is a belief in the power of sports to transform young lives—and a welcome break from the more formal aspects of the tour. “Their friendly sporting rivalry eases the tedium of royal engagements and gives them something to look forward to which is just for them,” says Majesty magazine editor Ingrid Seward. “It’s a bit of fun and they can josh with each other without being embarrassed. They relish these moments of total togetherness.”

After a week of royal duties, the couple left Prince George with nanny Maria Borrallo to stay overnight at the luxurious Matakauri Lodge, with its romantic views of Lake Wakatipu, in Queenstown. So now, it’s George’s turn to be a good sport.
