A FINAL GOODBYE TO HEATH
It was a moment as unexpected and irreverent as Heath Ledger himself. Just as the sun set over Cottesloe Beach near Perth, Australia, Feb. 9, Michelle Williams joined at least 50 other mourners, including Heath’s older sister Kate (top, right of Williams), for an impromptu splash in the waters the Aussie actor so loved. Some were dressed, others stripped down—but they all seemed, momentarily, to be free of the sorrow that fell when the 28-year-old died on Jan. 22 of an accidental overdose. The day had begun with a memorial service for 300 people. Afterwards, family including Williams, 27, but not her daughter with Ledger, Matilda, 2, went to a funeral at Fremantle Cemetery, then met up with guests again for a seaside wake at Indiana Tea House. There, the group linked arms and watched the sun go down. It was, said one guest, “exactly what Heath would have wanted.”
