From the moment he and Carolyn Bessette emerged from that romantically ramshackle Georgia chapel where they wed on Sept. 21,1996, John Kennedy seemed to settle happily into the life of a man who had met his match. Carolyn, who tenderly dubbed him “Mouse,” was not like “a lot of the women who had bowed to him,” says biographer C. David Heymann. A former Calvin Klein publicist from tony Greenwich, Conn., Bessette, 33, endured the flashbulbs but eluded deeper prying. Some say Kennedy had sought a woman whose style recalled his mother’s. Others described them as an ordinary loving duo. “She’d hold his hand or sit in his lap,” says her friend Paul Wilmot. “She liked to be next to him.”
