The Oscar-winning star of Moonstruck was struck dumb with fear. Cher, who hadn’t performed before a live audience in nearly eight years, was about to sing for 16,000 eager listeners at an outdoor amphitheater in Mansfield, Mass., to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of Boston radio station WXKS-FM. And perhaps it was her nervousness that made her blurt out “I just broke up with my boyfriend, so this next song [“We All Sleep Alone”] is particularly meaningful to me.” So it was that the parting of Cher and Rob Camilletti was finally and officially confirmed.

When Cher, 43, and deejay Camilletti, 24, began keeping company two years ago, some cynics dismissed the romance as a mere cradle attraction. Yet the relationship lasted. In recent months, however, there have been rumors that all has not been sunny with Cher and Rob. At one point Camilletti was reportedly dating two other women, porn star Traci Lords and L.A. club hostess Jonna Jettson, at the same time. But the breakup stories were denied until the Mansfield concert, when Cher announced that she and Rob had gone the way of all flash.

Backstage, Cher was nothing if not philosophical “It’s okay,” she said, shrugging, when asked about the split “That’s life.” As for Camilletti, he’s still spinning discs, perhaps dreaming of someday running for Mayor of Palm Springs.
