Drew Barrymore, 34, who plays roller derby girl “Smashley Simpson” in the comedy Whip It—her directorial debut—posed with members of the L.A. Derby Dolls at the film’s Sept. 29 Hollywood premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Barrymore told PEOPLE that the message behind her movie is “girls being empowered, finding your tribe, being your own hero. I can relate a lot to the story.”
