FOR BREAKING CELEBRITY NEWS EVERY DAY
HER PRIVATE STRUGGLE TO HEAL
With her Glee family standing behind her, Lea Michele, 26, made her first public appearance since losing her boyfriend Cory Monteith, 31, last month to a drug overdose. Accepting a trophy at the Teen Choice Awards on Aug. 11, the actress – who was wearing her “Cory” necklace – fought back tears as she dedicated the honor to Monteith: “For all of you out there who loved and admired Cory as much as I did, I promise that with your love we are going to get through this together … Cory reached out and he became a part of all our hearts, and that’s where he’ll stay forever.”
For Michele, getting through the loss of the man she told friends was her “forever” has been aided by her return to work on the set of Glee. (Monteith’s character Finn Hudson will be written off – and the actor memorialized – during the upcoming season’s third episode.) Still, every day remains a battle. “Just getting up in the morning means remembering Cory is gone,” says a source close to her, who adds that Michele’s recent outings (like attending Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s baby shower and a dinner at Glee creator Ryan Murphy’s home) are simply ways to achieve some level of normalcy. “She’s been trying to get out as much as she can, so she’s not by herself at home.”
Between sleepovers with pals and being supported by her castmates back on the set, Michele is healing slowly but surely. “She’s smiling more,” says a source. “Her friends are helping her get to a new normal.”
USHER’S FAMILY DRAMA
While recording in a studio less than two miles from his Atlanta home on Aug. 5, Usher, 34, received the scariest phone call imaginable: His older son, Usher V, 5, had gotten his arm stuck in the pool drain, causing him to nearly drown. After two workers freed the boy, he was rushed to the hospital, and Usher and ex-wife Tameka Raymond, 42, kept vigil at their son’s bedside. But their united front was short-lived: The next day Tameka filed for an emergency custody hearing, alleging that the singer and Voice coach is an absentee dad relying on family members who are unable to care properly for Usher V and his brother Naviyd, 4. “I don’t know who my kids are with,” she said through tears during the Aug. 9 hearing. The singer’s attorney John Mayoue countered that the children “are thriving” under Usher’s care.
After hours of emotional testimony, the judge upheld the exes’ current arrangement, in which Usher has primary custody and Tameka has limited custodial rights. Though they hugged before leaving the courtroom, the exes will face off again at a previously scheduled hearing Aug. 27. “Tameka remains hopeful they can find a way to work together,” says her lawyer Angela Kinley. “They both love their boys more than anything in this world.” Meanwhile the boy the family calls “Cinco” is out of the hospital and enjoyed an outing to a children’s play center on Aug. 13. “Cinco is going to make a full recovery,” says a source close to Tameka, “and that’s what really matters.”
CAN THE X FACTOR JUDGE BABY-PROOF HIS WORLD? HOW CAN THE RHONJ STAR GO FROM A McMANSION TO THE BIG HOUSE? SCOOP OFFERS SOME TIPS
Switch to Dark Colors
For Cowell, 53, who’s expecting a child with Lauren Silverman, white shirts won’t stay clean long with the under-3, projectile-food set. MAY WE SUGGEST: a Hawaiian shirt
When Cowell squeezes in some baby-bonding time, he’ll have to swap out the Jet Ski and yacht attire. MAY WE SUGGEST: a baby carrier
Un-Pimp that Crib
His Beverly Hills mansion (with its abundance of white sofas) doesn’t scream “child-friendly.” MAY WE SUGGEST: a jungle gym
Cowell’s black Bronco doesn’t even have shoulder straps, so there is no way it’s car-seat ready. MAY WE SUGGEST: Prince William‘s Range Rover-Britax infant carrier combo
Trim Those Locks
Given the amount of hair pulling that occurs on the show, Giudice, 41, should know the danger of long waves should she land in prison on fraud charges. MAY WE SUGGEST: a pixie cut
No More Table Flipping
Given the nailed-down nature of prison furniture, she’ll have to express her emotions in a different way. MAY WE SUGGEST: a cafeteria tray
There won’t be a tanning bed nearby, so her jumpsuit will be the only thing that’s orange. MAY WE SUGGEST: suntan lotion for the allotted time outdoors
Say Goodbye to Home Cooking
She’s going to have to get her taste buds used to meals in the pokey, which can cost under $3.
MAY WE SUGGEST: a pre-jail diet of TV dinners
LIAM & MILEY
SAME OLD DRAMA
Though Miley Cyrus, 20, and Liam Hemsworth, 23, attended the Aug. 8 L.A. premiere of his film together, the once-cozy couple seemed more like pals than paramours. They hardly spoke, even while sitting side by side at the screening, and spent most of the afterparty apart. But three days later at the Teen Choice Awards, the pair, who didn’t sit together, held hands backstage while perusing Sprinkles cupcakes. “They seemed happy,” says an onlooker. So what’s with these two? Basically, they can’t stop, says a source close to Cyrus: “They’re still engaged, but there are no wedding plans. They fight a lot. It’s just a matter of time before they split again.”
