LIVING WITH ASPERGER’S
Her angelic voice made her an overnight star, but Susan Boyle was never comfortable in the spotlight. Just days after she finished second on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, she checked herself into a mental-health center. After years plagued by depression and anxiety, Boyle, 52, finally sought out a specialist. The diagnosis: She did not have brain damage, as she had been told as a child, but instead has Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism. “Now I have a clearer understanding of what’s wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself,” she told the U.K. newspaper Observer.
She has also developed coping mechanisms. “When I have the support of people around me, I am fine,” said Boyle, who has moved back into her late mother’s home in Blackburn, Scotland, and continues to perform and record. “[Asperger’s] will not make a difference to my life. It’s just a condition that I have to live with and work through.”
‘Tis the season! After picking out a 10-ft. noble fir together, Jennifer Aniston, 44, and Justin Theroux, 42, threw their annual tree-trimming party on Dec. 8 at their newly renovated Bel Air home. On the guest list? Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan, and Courteney Cox. “This is always Jen’s favorite party every year,” a source tells Scoop. “She goes all out because she loves Christmas.” The couple, who had recently been apart due to work commitments, are looking forward to more quality time together, adds the source: They’ll be jetting off to Mexico for the holidays.
After Kendall Jenner, 18, and Harry Styles, 19, shared a meal at Craig’s in West Hollywood on Nov. 20, a source told Scoop the reality star and the pop singer were simply friends. But have things taken a romantic turn? The duo enjoyed another high-profile outing, leaving N.Y.C.’s Gansevoort Hotel together on Dec. 7 before lunching at Soho House.
Did Mary-Kate Olsen, 27, go shopping for engagement rings? Though her boyfriend Olivier Sarkozy, 44, is already “part of the family,” according to an insider, another source says a recent report that Olsen has been perusing diamonds is not true. Still, the pair remain smitten. Adds the insider: “They have a very strong connection.”

RECOVERING AT HOME
After more than four months of inpatient psychiatric treatment, Amanda Bynes, 27, is home for the holidays. Now living with her parents in Thousand Oaks, Calif., the actress is adjusting to a daily routine markedly more low-key than the lifestyle she led in New York before she was forcibly hospitalized for erratic behavior in July. Activities include walking her dog with her mother, Lynn (who remains in indefinite legal control of her daughter’s well-being and finances), 66, and father, Rick, 68, going to lunch at P.F. Chang’s and shopping at Costco. “She looks like she enjoys spending time with her parents,” says a source. Despite her troubled past, Bynes, who is continuing treatment on an outpatient basis, is focusing on the future. “She’s looking at various colleges with the intention of majoring in fashion design,” the family’s lawyer Tamar Arminak tells PEOPLE. “She’s mentioned before she’s interested in creating a clothing line.” But in the meantime, Arminak says the former Nickelodeon star is putting family first: “She’s very happy to reestablish the loving relationship with her family that she once shared.”
