Just seven months after his bad-boy behavior subjected them to tabloid scrutiny, Jason Aldean filed for divorce from his wife of 11 years, Jessica Ussery. “This is a really tough time for my entire family,” said the country star in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE on April 29, three days after the filing. “Jessica and I have been together since we were teenagers. We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs over the years as we grew up together as a couple.” One of those “downs” came last September when Aldean, 36, was photographed cozying up to former American Idol contestant Brittany Kerr at a Hollywood bar. The singer, who first catapulted to fame with his 2010 album My Kinda Party, promptly issued a mea culpa via Twitter: “The truth is that I screwed up,” he wrote. “I had too much to drink, let the party get out of hand and acted inappropriately. I ultimately ended up embarrassing my family and myself.”

For a while the couple seemed to get back on track. In October, Ussery, 33, gushed to PEOPLE, “He’s very touchy-feely. He’ll always want to hold my hand or get a hug.” Two months later a hopeful Aldean said the family was “just looking to have a great year in 2013.” And in March the two cuddled together at an afterparty following his concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden. So what went wrong? For Ussery the humiliation may have become too tough to bear. “She was a devoted wife, but I don’t think [the Brittany Kerr incident] ever sorted itself out,” says the insider. “Jessica was very embarrassed, and [that feeling] didn’t go away.”

For now the former high school sweethearts are focusing on their two daughters, Keeley, 10, and Kendyl, 5. “They love their kids,” says the insider, who notes that Aldean is a doting father. (Kelly Clarkson, who sang with Aldean on the hit “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” called him a “family dude.”) For his part, Aldean, who is on tour through the fall, has only loving words for Ussery. “She will always be important to me because she is the mother of my children,” he said in his statement. “I know that we will both always make our daughters our No. 1 priority.”
