When Renée Zellweger and Bradley Cooper shared a cozy dinner in New York City in late June, it was hard to know what would happen next. After all, in recent months Cooper, 34, has been linked to Jennifer Aniston, and he’s also spent time with Mary-Kate Olsen and Lake Bell. But his fling with Zellweger (his costar in the upcoming Case 39), 40, has staying power. On Aug. 8 they jetted to Spain for the premiere of The Hangover. And before the trip, Zellweger was spotted visiting N.Y.C.’s Smyth Hotel, where Cooper was a guest. “They tried to keep the visits very low-key,” a source tells Scoop. Their reps are mum, but one of her pals is rooting for the romance: “They make a great couple. He’s a gentleman, and she’s so sweet. They get along well; they have fun together, and they’re really happy.” IS PAULA REALLY DONE WITH IDOL? Paula Abdul‘s refusal to sign a multiyear, eight-figure contract with American Idol may be a negotiating tactic. “[FOX] was low-balling her and putting restrictions on her contract,” explains a friend, who says her previous annual salary was about $3 million. “If they offer her a good deal, she might [reconsider].” FOX honcho Mike Darnell counters, “Anything could happen, but at the moment we’re taking it at face value and moving on.” But Abdul need not worry about her next gig: Execs at So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars have indicated interest in working with her.
