Jessica & Ashlee Simpson

The Simpson sisters are used to competing on the music charts, but Jessica and Ashlee may be locked in another race: to the altar! As Ashlee, 23, sports her “perfect” promise ring from beau Pete Wentz, 28, big sister Jessica, 27, and her Dallas Cowboys hunk Tony Romo, 27, flaunt their love. Following a PDA-filled spree of L.A. clubs on March 1, Romo told Scoop at the Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Male Awards in N.Y.C. on March 3, “I’m sure I’ll get married one day—I don’t know when.” When asked if he’s engaged to Jessica—who’s slated to perform for troops in Kuwait March 10 for Operation MySpace—he said, “It’s just rumors.” But a friend says, “Tony loves that girl. They could go the distance.” And at a Stoli party at Chicago’s the Underground Feb. 21, Ashlee beamed, saying, “[Tony’s] a sweetheart.” As for Ashlee’s own flame? “He’s my best friend. I rely on him with everything,” she said while keeping mum about the ring she got for her birthday in October (“I can’t talk about it. It’s a personal, special thing,” she said March 1). So which girl will walk down the aisle first? “You never know what is going to happen,” says Ashlee. “Probably me!”

Hilton, 27, and new boyfriend Benji Madden, 29, met up with his brother and (fellow Good Charlotte band member) Joel, and her pal Nicole Richie at Hollywood’s Geisha House on Feb. 28 for a pre-wedding party for bandmate Billy Martin. “Paris and Benji were all over each other,” says one guest. “Joel and Nicole were laughing and having a great time.” Madden and Hilton have been inseparable lately, visiting clubs in L.A. and suburban St. Louis together. “Paris calls Benji her boy to her friends,” says a source. “She is in full nesting mode already. It’s a new thing for her.”

Hilton turned heads on March 1 when she sat down with a bearded “guru” in L.A. But he’s no guru! “The gentleman was indeed an actor [Maxie Santillan] and Paris, among others, is turning the tables on the paparazzi,” says Hilton’s rep. “All will be revealed in the new show Pop Fiction [airing March 6 on E]!”

A month after being honorably discharged from the Army, Eric O’Hara, stepbrother of The Hills’ Heidi Montag, fell to his death Feb. 28. (Heidi’s father is married to O’Hara’s mother.) The 24-year-old, who served in Iraq combat missions since 2004, slipped while removing ice from a hotel rooftop in Steamboat Springs, Colo. “He was a true war hero,” Montag said in a statement to Scoop. Montag, 21, and Spencer Pratt, 24, returned to Colorado to attend services. “Losing my brother at an early age is such a tragedy,” said Montag. “I’ll really miss him.”

Bringing new meaning to the word sexyback, Justin Timberlake, 27, slips into a skimpy bikini bottom, dons a mustache and rocks out in this scene from The Love Guru, hitting theaters June 20. In the Mike Myers comeback movie, Timberlake plays a hockey player appropriately named Jacques Grande, who speaks in an exaggerated French accent. Mais oui!

Eddie Van Halen

Five months into the first Eddie Van Halen-David Lee Roth tour in two decades, enmity has not proved a problem—Eddie’s health has. On March 3 the band postponed concerts so the guitarist, 53, can undergo “comprehensive medical tests to determine a defined diagnosis.” Could it be a return of the tongue cancer he battled in 2000? Van Halen beat it after treatments including alternative methods suggested by a doctor whom his ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli, in her memoir Losing It, calls “a quack”—and despite his refusal to give up smoking. Another possibility: substance abuse. The rocker did a stint in rehab just before touring, and as a source told PEOPLE at the time, the pressure of performing could be “overwhelming. I am worried how this will affect his sobriety.”

“I definitely have a type—rockers with an edge!”

American Idol fans are buzzing that the show has already spawned America’s new teen dream: David Archuleta. So what’s so special about the 17-year-old Utah native? Read on.

HE’S TALENTED: “His rendition of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ is the second-best vocal ever on the show,” says Billboard’s Fred Bronson. “In a different era, he would already have a recording contract.”

HE’S RELATABLE: “His appeal is all-American and wholesome,” says New York Image Consultants’ Amanda Sanders.

HE’S SCANDAL-FREE: “David fills a spot where there’s a void,” says Bronson. “He has innocence and humility.”

HE’S FAN CLUB-READY: First came Clay Aiken‘s Claymates, then Taylor Hicks‘ Soul Patrol. Archuleta’s groupie moniker? The Arch Angels.

Finalist David Hernandez, 24, ended a three-year stint in September 2007 as a nude dancer at Dick’s Cabaret in Phoenix. “Everyone liked him here,” manager Gordy Bryan tells Scoop. Fox says it won’t affect his standing on the show…. Meanwhile in the April issue of the U.K.’s Glamour magazine, Simon Cowell, 48, admits to receiving regular Botox injections, wearing platform heels and turning down a $2 million endorsement deal from Viagra.

Ellen DeGeneres, 50, who last year broke down over the plight of pooch Iggy, has become a part-owner of Halo, a pet care company. “This food is the highest quality,” she said. “If you’re going with the lamb, I’d recommend [pairing it with] a nice Pinot!”

Bridget Moynahan, 36, has been in mommy mode since giving birth to son John Edward Thomas Moynahan in August (Dad is NFL quarterback—and ex-boyfriend—Tom Brady). But the actress took a break from diaper duty on Jan. 12 to shoot the upcoming ad campaign for luxe jewelry brand Diamonair at Los Angeles’ Smashbox Studios. “Bridget was a natural choice for the campaign,” the company said in a statement. “Her beauty transcends time.”

The studly star of HBO’s In Treatment dishes about therapy, being an Army brat and his antiaging secrets

Your In Treatment character, Alex, is in therapy. Have you ever been?

I’ve never been. I’m not at all opposed to it, and if I thought I needed to go, I’d do so in a heartbeat!

Alex is a grounded Navy pilot. Since your dad was an Army colonel, did you glean anything from him for the role?

Absolutely. Every time we walked outside of our home, it was drilled into us that we represented our father, his rank and our country. I infused Alex with that.

Along with In Treatment, you’re a billionaire on Dirty Sexy Money and a schoolteacher on The New Adventures of Old Christine. Which is your favorite role?

I love all three of them, particularly Alex in In Treatment because it’s such an intense experience. Also because it’s all about the words and the dialogue. There’s nothing to hide behind.

What’s your dream role?

I’d love to play Marvin Gaye. He’s an iconic figure but with a lot of contradictions.

Do you have any anti-aging or beauty secrets?

I’m not one to drink or smoke or do drugs, so I think that’s paying dividends now. In this business you’ll always continue to grow if you push yourself. So my drive keeps me handsome, I guess you could say. That’s my secret to staying fresh!
