HATE DAYS A WEEK
She’s ‘abandoned,’ he’s ‘betrayed.’ Paul McCartney and soon-to-be ex Heather Mills McCartney duke it out in the press. Our P.R. expert declares the headline winners
Last Monday police were called to Paul McCartney’s London home after a man was seen scaling a wall. A burglar? Crazed Beatles fan? Hardly. It was estranged wife Heather Mills McCartney’s security guard trying to open the gate after McCartney, 64, changed the locks. Conveniently at least one photographer was on the scene (above). Almost immediately McCartney’s pals cried foul, claiming the event was choreographed to win sympathy for the ex-model, 38 (who recently hired spin-meister Phil Hall, an ex-editor of News of the World and Hello! magazine). If it was a ploy, it may have failed. “It is so plainly staged,” says London public-relations expert Mark Borkowski. “I give it only 5 out of 10 for P.R. impact.” How do the week’s other stories stack up?
ADVANTAGE: McCARTNEY OR MILLS?
The Sun reports Mills won’t use her “Lady” title post-divorce. “It’s a way to [prove] she’s not a gold digger,” says Borkowski.
MILLS: + 6
She moves into a barn. (Okay, a $900,000 barn.) “It’s difficult for [Paul] to counter. He’s in the mansion; she’s in the barn.”
MILLS: + 8
Daily Mirror runs photos of a gaunt-looking Mills with the headline ABANDONED. “A near-perfect winner.”
MILLS: + 9
News of the World says the ex-Beatle feels “betrayed” when “all [he] ever did was love [Mills].” “A great score.”
McCARTNEY: + 9
Daily Mail claims Heather “Took £1M From Joint Account.” “It makes her out to be a money grubber.”
McCARTNEY: + 8
Staged photo? “She was driving a Ford Mondeo, [Britain’s] most average car. The day before, she was in a Porsche.”
MILLS: + 5
Couples Beware: One of the secrets to a long and happy marriage may be not inviting an MTV camera crew into your home. The latest casualties are Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler, who rocked our world with their at-home antics on Meet the Barkers—and again on Aug. 8, when he filed for divorce. Witness the fall of MTV’s reality families (fingers crossed for Sharon & Ozzy !).
MEET THE BARKERS
Ex-Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and former Miss USA Shanna Moakler announced their split to PEOPLE just seven months after the birth of daughter Alabama. (They also have a son Landon, 2; Moakler has a daughter, Atiana, 7, from a previous relationship with Oscar de la Hoya.) “They were very much in love in the beginning,” says one guest at their 2004 Nightmare Before Christmas-themed wedding. “No one attending that would have expected them to break up.”
MARRIED: Oct. 30, 2004
FILED FOR DIVORCE: Aug. 8, 2006
‘TIL DEATH DO US PART
‘Til death? Not exactly. Still, Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro did manage to last nearly three years, which is longer than many Hollywood marriages. (Is he now regretting the “CE” tattoo on his chest?)
MARRIED: Nov. 22, 2003
SEPARATED: July 18, 2006
MARRIED: Oct. 26, 2002
DIVORCED: June 30, 2006
Who’s Seen Baby Suri?
It’s been more than 115 days since the littlest Cruise was born, and she hasn’t been seen in public. But apparently she’s really good-looking, according to celeb pals of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes who have come forward bearing witness. Last month, after visiting Cruise’s home, Leah Remini called Suri a “beautiful, beaming baby.” At the London premiere of Volver Aug. 3, Cruise’s ex Penélope Cruz told PEOPLE, “Suri’s one of the most beautiful babies I’ve seen.” Jada Pinkett Smith chimes in, “She’s gorgeous, with a head full of black hair.” So why haven’t Suri’s parents shown her off? “I have no idea,” says Smith. “But they’re happy. They need to be left alone.”
CARE & FEEDING OF THE PAPARAZZI
Experts have long argued about how to respond when surrounded by ravenous photogs. Placate them with soft words and pizza? Or return fire? The debate rages
Taking pity on the paps who stood outside beau Harry Morton’s Malibu pad on July 30, Lindsay Lohan sent them three varieties of pizza: pepperoni, cheese and vegetarian.
While waiting outside Nicole Kidman‘s Sydney home on June 20, days before she married Keith Urban, about 20 paparazzi received a case of Victoria Bitter beer (right) with a note that said, “Enjoy! Nicole and Keith.”
What is it about being hounded by shutterbugs that makes stars want to douse them with liquids? From left: In Beverly Hills on June 6: Nicole Richie wields a mean water bottle. In Los Angeles on May 31: Kirstie Alley soaks the paps with a water gun. Trendsetter? In Kentwood, La., on Sept. 25, 2004, Britney Spears (yes, that’s her under the mask) opts for hurling a creamy milk shake.
Pam & Kid Cover Up
Five days after Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock’s splashy—but not legally binding—wedding bash in Saint-Tropez, they made it official at the Beverly Hills Courthouse Aug. 3, a source tells Scoop. (Pam’s rep had no comment.) The star clearly had privacy in mind: On her Web site, she initially claimed to have wed in Detroit, then replaced that post with a simple “Just Married!”
HAWKE’S MYSTERY WOMAN
Ethan Hawke’s new love interest—whose name hasn’t become public—is “lovely, smart and well-educated,” says a Hawke source. She’s also, the source confirms, a former nanny to his children. The relationship is “all very aboveboard,” says the source, noting the pair lost contact in ’04 after Hawke split from Uma Thurman and reunited this summer after a chance run-in. The actor’s rep had no comment.
Back On and Back Out
Kate Moss and Pete Doherty chose Bedfordshire’s Rhythm Festival to show the world they’re back in sync. “They weren’t at all low-key,” says an onlooker at the Aug. 6 concert…. Just weeks after splitting from Carmen Electra, Dave Navarro is taking up with a fellow not-quite-singleton, adult film star Jenna Jameson (recently separated from her husband, Jay Grdina). “It’s new,” says a Navarro source. “They’re not officially dating.”
MAD ABOUT MEL
Celebs—and T-shirts—take a stance on the Mel Gibson scandal
It’s not an official controversy until the T-shirt has been printed. In addition to this one from Cafe Press ($21.99, cafepress.com), others declare: “Don’t Free Mel,” “Why Mel?” and “Mel’s Mouth: Lethal Weapon.”
“Is he [an] anti-Semite? Absolutely not. But it’s no secret that he has always fought a terrible battle with alcoholism.”
—JODIE FOSTER TO THE LOS ANGELES TIMES
“He doesn’t have an anti-Semitic bone in his body. Sometimes when you have a couple too many you’re stupid…. It’s just sad.”
—PATRICK SWAYZE TO PEOPLE
“All our controversies [about comments on George W. Bush] would have been over if I … said that I was drunk.”
—NATALIE MAINES AT AN N.Y.C. CONCERT
“I, Rob Schneider, a half-Jew, pledge from this day forward to never work with Mel Gibson.”
—ROB SCHNEIDER IN AN OPEN LETTER IN VARIETY
WHAT THE MEL?
Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada Pinkett Smith is, almost literally, all over the place. The actress called Scoop from London (where she was promoting her rock band Wicked Wisdom’s album) to discuss life in L.A., her antiviolence work in Philadelphia and her family’s ongoing struggle with drug addiction.
You and Will Smith participated in Charlie Mack Alston’s recent Party 4 Peace antiviolence fund-raiser in Philadelphia.
It’s not something we do for a photo op. I feel like it’s my duty to bring some awareness to the genocide that’s occurring—blacks killing blacks…. And it’s not just some black kids in the hood. This epidemic will affect every community, every economic class. We have to go back and teach [people] how to survive the obstacles we did.
You’ve said in the past your family has had problems with drugs.
My mom [who battled heroin] has been clean 15, 16 years. And another close relative is rehabilitating [from drugs]. I believe it was crack this time.
What did you learn in Philly?
I asked a young man [at a juvenile detention center] what could have prevented him from being inside. He was like, “There’s just nothing for us to do [on the outside]. There’s structure here. We know what we have to do all day long.” You think that rec centers are old ideas, but it came from his mouth: “Structure.”
Are schools the answer?
It’s not enough to say kids need education, because schools are not equipped to deal with kids coming in hungry, angry, not focused…. We need programs [that teach] coping skills so they can deal with these environments. Then they’ll have the capacity to be educated.
Deep Thoughts with Tommy Lee
On CBS’s Rock Star: Supernova, Tommy Lee doles out his own brand of rocker insight to warbling wannabes.
Can I get a “Hell yeah!”?
I’m personally looking for a singer who maybe might fall off the stage. That’s what I want to see from you. I want you to scare me.
There’s nothing better on the planet than a good catfight or a nice barroom brawl.
Once again, dude, you’re raising the bar and I’m pulling up a bar stool.
