Perhaps they wanted to take a stand against the latest claims that their marriage was over. Or maybe they simply craved some time alone, away from home and the constant media attention. Maybe they just wanted a good Yorkshire pudding—whatever. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey—both wearing their wedding bands—flew to London Oct. 7 for a European getaway. Upon landing, they embraced and smiled as the paparazzi clicked away. But what, exactly, is going on with Simpson, 25, and Lachey, 31? Though the two have both been seen recently without wedding rings on their fingers (see below), her rep insists they are still a couple. “Nick and Jessica have not separated,” he said in a statement. “Rumors to the contrary are simply not true.”
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher‘s first public adventure as a married couple? A trip to Barcelona Oct. 8, where Moore, 42, and Kutcher, 27, stayed at the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I, ordering in chocolates and other treats. Moore also mixed pleasure with business, shooting a commercial for Freixenet, a Spanish sparkling wine.
More Jen and Vince
They’re back. Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. In Chicago. Sharing a few laughs. At least on Oct. 11 at the Vic Theatre, where Vaughn, 35, brought his Wild West Comedy Show tour, and Aniston, 36, watched from the balcony. (She also caught his show Sept. 16 in Oxnard, Calif., after they filmed the comedy The Break Up this summer.) Her favorite part: when Vaughn showed an old clip of himself performing in an ABC After School Special about sex. At the party after the show, Vaughn grabbed Aniston around the waist, pulled her to his side and told a few friends, “She’s the best!” while rubbing her back. He later gave her a kiss on the temple, and the two began dancing, eyes locked, before kissing and making out as bodyguards shooed the crowd away.
The power of television—specifically, The Oprah Winfrey Show—was shown on Oct. 11, when the Child Predator Watch, a feature launched only a week earlier, helped nab two accused child molesters. How? Oprah Winfrey showed pictures of 10 fugitives, viewers recognized two, and authorities made the arrests. Those who provide information leading to arrests will be given a $100,000 reward from Winfrey. “Best money I ever spent,” she said on the program. “We’re going to catch everyone [on the list].” Meanwhile, some viewers have started an Oprah operation of their own: a grass roots campaign to nominate Winfrey for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The End of the Affair
Jude Law and Sienna Miller‘s on-again, off-again relationship is off again—for good, says a source close to Law. And the actor’s infamous affair with a nanny may not be entirely to blame. According to British press reports, a furious Law, 32—who had been wooing Miller, 23, back for months—booted the actress from their London home, believing she had become too friendly with actor Daniel Craig, 37. Reps for Miller and Craig—expected to be named the next James Bond—had no comment, while a source close to Miller notes the two, who met while filming Layer Cake, are just “good friends and have been for a while.” After their latest bust up, Law headed to Spain with a buddy, where he spent two nights lying low in Seville, while Miller was spotted lounging poolside at a Moroccan resort. As for their future? Says the source close to Law: “He is moving on.”
J.Lo Takes Mexico
Filming her upcoming crime drama Bordertown in Nogales, Mexico, won Jennifer Lopez rave reviews from at least one local—the city’s mayor, Lorenzo de la Fuente, who met with the star and her husband, Marc Anthony. “She’s a good actress, a good dancer and a good singer,” he told Scoop. “And she’s muy simpatica, down-to-earth.” Muy simpatica for a star, anyway. One sign: The actress, nicknamed “La Yeilo” (a Spanish pronunciation of “J.Lo”) by Mexican fans, got lunch from Burger King one day, and ordered local food from the family-owned restaurant Elvira’s, washing it down with caffeine-free Pepsi.
Boy George Busted
Androgynous ’80s pop icon Boy George, 44, called New York City cops Oct. 7 to report a burglary at his apartment. Instead of a break-in, the police said they found 13 baggies of cocaine and arrested the singer. “He doesn’t know where [the drugs] came from,” says his lawyer Lou Freeman. George—who has a large star tattooed on top of his head—was arraigned for criminal possession and filing a false report. He flew to England two days later—which is fine with authorities, as long as he returns for his next court date, Dec. 19.
Country living seems to be the theme of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban‘s bond, After trips to Litchfield County, Conn., and Woodstock, N.Y., the pair’s latest rustic stop was Leiper’s Fork, Tenn., near Urban’s Nashville home. The two, holding hands, had lunch Oct. 9 at the Country Boy (right), where Kidman, 38, ordered a turkey sandwich with black-eyed peas and Urban, 37, had a burger. Dessert? Later, at Maggie Moo’s in Nashville. (Kidman had cake-batter ice cream; Urban had “utterly cream.”) Though reps say they’re just friends, “they were standing very close just giggling and grinning,” says Moo’s manager Marsha Russell. “They both seemed really happy to be in each other’s company.”
The Tonight Show‘s
Madonna, Jerry Seinfeld, Jamie Lee Curtis, Billy Crystal, Bill Cosby, Julie Andrews, Ray Romano, Will Smith—the list of celebrity children’s authors is seemingly endless. Now Jay Leno has published his second: How to Be the Funniest Kid in the Whole Wide World (or Just in Your Class). Does the world really need another? Leno, 55, discussed the issue with Scoop.
Don’t you feel a little guilty about contributing to the celebrity-authored children’s book glut?
No, because 100 percent of my profit goes to charity, to COPS, an organization benefiting families of police officers slain in the line of duty. I don’t make a dime on this, and anytime you put a book in a kid’s hand, even a bad book… and they find it intriguing, that means they’ll probably like a good book, and anything to get the kids to read is a good thing.
So there’s no downside?
Do I think it’s silly that celebrity books sometimes outsell real authors? Yes, that seems a little ironic or sad.
Martha Stewart recently said that she and her daughter Alexis, who is 40, still read children’s books together. Is that weird?
No, it’s interesting to me. The term “children’s book” has sort o f degenerated into this beautiful illustration with one line, like “I like a cat, how about that?” This is a big pet peeve of my wife’s. There are great stories that are written for children but are great stories. I think Harry Potter is a perfect example.
Ever think of starting a book club, like Oprah?
Oprah has done a wonderful thing with her book club, but it’s not what we do on late night. It’s a bit more fast paced. You have to keep it moving and keep the jokes coming. We’re a short attention span theater, boom, boom, boom.
How’s the five-year retirement plan going?
Still turning over the Tonight reins in 2009?
Five-year retirement plan?
No, no, I’ll have a lifetime in TV.
Does Conan drop by to check out the Tonight host’s parking space?
No, that’s silly.
