A 2006 CMA nominee for Female Vocalist of the Year, the “Born to Fly” singer has seen her career soar. So why would Evans, 35, literally “step out of my comfort zone,” as she puts it, to compete on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars this fall? “I am a risk taker, and this is a risk,” she says. “It’s so exciting for me because it’s out of the norm of what country artists do. You know, we write songs, we make records, and we tour. And this was a chance for me to do my thing.” Before the show even aired, Evans spent six strenuous weeks training with professional ballroom dancer Tony Dovolani. “When he wanted me to do a turn and I kept not doing it right, he got really frustrated,” says Evans, “and I could just feel the tears well up inside me. But it just made me want to get it right. I’m very competitive.” So is there any risk too daunting for the mother of three (with political consultant husband Craig Schelske, 43)? “I would like to get a tattoo, but I’m scared,” she says, laughing. “Of the pain and that it will still be there when I’m old.”
