Hollywood's leading ladies took on the red carpet at the 64th annual Golden Globe Awards with daring details and flattering silhouettes
JENNIFER LOPEZ IN MARCHESA
“[Lopez] went straight for the dress I had in mind for her,” says Marchesa codesigner Georgina Chapman. Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings, a Roger Vivier clutch and Jimmy Choos completed the look.
DREW BARRYMORE DIOR HAUTE COUTURE BY JOHN GALLIANO
Leaving the “Urban Outfitters jewelry” at home in favor of Leviev diamond earrings and a Celestina bag, Barrymore paired her pale gown with dramatic makeup. She wanted to “look like she had an edge,” says her makeup artist, Lancôme’s Gucci Westman.
PENELOPE CRUZ IN CHANEL HAUTE COUTURE
“I just know what I like and what I don’t,” says Cruz of dressing for the red carpet. “Karl Lagerfeld made this dress especially for this day.”
JESSICA BIEL IN VALENTINO
The presenter, who paired her shimmery gown with Lorraine Schwartz chandelier earrings, offered awards-show advice: “Just pick a nice dress you can feel comfortable in for four or five hours.”
REESE WITHERSPOON IN NINA RICCI
Witherspoon accessorized her strapless yellow dress with a Van Cleef & Arpels diamond and ruby bracelet and scarlet Brian Atwood pumps.
JENNIFER GARNER IN GUCCI
“Once I saw the dress, I just fell off my chair,” says the star’s makeup artist, Chanel Beauty’s Angela Levin. Accented by a gold Tod’s clutch and Bulgari diamond earrings, “the look is modern, clean and glamorous.”
AMERICA & JENNIFER: HOORAY FOR CURVES!
TWO GLOBE GODDESSES PROVE ACTRESSES WITH REAL BODIES CAN BE REAL WINNERS
“I look fabulous,” Jennifer Hudson declares to PEOPLE, “if I do say so myself.” Accessorizing her Vera Wang with a best supporting actress Globe, the Dreamgirls star captured the crowd’s heart—as did another winner who stood out from the size-0 starlets. Said Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera in her emotional speech: “I hear from young girls on a daily basis how [my character] makes them feel worthy and lovable and that they have more to offer the world than they thought.” Will the success of Hudson, 25, and Ferrera, 22, help redefine the face—and body—of Hollywood stardom? “They’re great to see because they really are living their dream and doing it on their terms,” says Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. Adds Ferrera’s costar Vanessa Williams: “We’re showing that a leading lady can be curvy, beautiful and funny. Curvy women are kicking ass!”
As A-listers trekked down the red carpet to L.A.’s Beverly Hilton Hotel, Drew Barrymore leaned into a friend and said, “This is going to take forever.”… Meanwhile, Heidi Klum ended up wearing the red carpet. “I don’t think they vacuumed,” Klum said, explaining why the hem of her white Givenchy gown was turning red. “I have all the fuzz on my dress!” … Many men boasted that they got dressed in minutes. Not Will Smith: “Today, we were almost late,” said wife Jada. “He takes his sweet time.”… “This is always the most fun place!” announced Annette Bening as she walked into the ladies’ room. She chatted with Sharon Stone, then adjusted her dress and said, “I think I’m reorganized now.” … Best backstage quips: Former American Idol also-ran Jennifer Hudson held up her Globe, saying, “You like my award, Simon?” And The Devil Wears Prada’s Emily Blunt revealed what the devil wears in Hollywood: “Ugg boots.” … Losing best actress in a TV drama to The Closer’s Kyra Sedgwick was the best thing that happened all night to Medium’s Patricia Arquette. “From the second we sat down until they said the winner, I felt like vomiting,” said Arquette. “Then they said the name, and now I feel great!”
When the official Globes festivities ended, the real partying began. At the IN STYLE & Warner Bros. bash, Leonardo DiCaprio had lost his black tie and happily schmoozed with goodtime girls Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore for a half hour. Diaz then hung with another nightlife Iron Man, Jamie Foxx, before clocking out at 10:30 p.m…. Had she stayed she could have cheered on Entourage star Adrian Grenier as he tried to scramble up a 10-ft. light tower by the Godiva chocolate station—while his own entourage howled with laughter…. The IN STYLE bash boasted so many celebs that party planners let in Felicity Huffman but left her husband, William H. Macy, at the door. No worries—the Thank You For Smoking star says he let his housewife “hang with the Wisteria Lane girls” and trotted over to the party hosted by Fox. Huffman later found Macy at the bar and immediately started to jump up and down to the James song “Laid.” Later on, Huffman was allowed to bring her plus one past the IN STYLE door…. Dreamgirls toasted their big wins for the evening at the Paramount Pictures party, where Beyoncé and Jay-Z made a brief appearance but ducked out before Jennifer Hudson entered, commanding pal Bobby actress Joy Bryant to “come and give me a hug!” … After attending the ceremony with Big Love costars Jeanne Tripplehorn and Chloë Sevigny, Ginnifer Goodwin whipped out her cell phone at the HBO afterparty to reconnect with her real date for the evening, boyfriend Chris Klein. Gushing about her eight-month romance, Goodwin tells PEOPLE, “Our dynamic is perfection. Absolute perfection!” … Pink has a new passion of her own. “I’m obsessed with [the Al Gore documentary] An Inconvenient Truth,” said the singer at the E!/EMA afterparty. “I’m a huge fan of Paul McCartney because his tours are environmentally friendly. He’s my inspiration.” … Sienna Miller got sassy with photographers at the Weinstein Company celebration. “You’re all vultures! Vultures!” teased the Factory Girl star, grabbing a camera and turning the lens on the paparazzi, who happily posed for her…. Ben Affleck spent half an hour fawning over The Office stars John Krasinski, B.J. Novak, Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey at the NBC & Universal Pictures & Focus Features & Cartier soirée. When someone told Affleck that wife Jennifer Garner was waiting for him across the room, he said, “Tell her to come here. I’m with the cast of The Office!” “We didn’t win tonight,” says Fischer, “but in another sense we did because Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner geeked over our show!” … Prince feted his Best Original Song win at his Beverly Wilshire hotel afterparty, where Sienna Miller popped in after 1 a.m. and got cozy with Leonardo DiCaprio in the smoking lounge, draping her arm around his neck and often leaning in so close that their lips almost touched…. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes joined Prince at 1:15 a.m. followed shortly by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. Cruise and Holmes swayed to salsa in the main room, then engaged in a chat with Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore…. Mr. and Mrs. Cruise also hit up the Creative Artists Agency post-Globes get-together, where “you had Tom Cruise sitting there with Katie Holmes, and you had Nicole Kidman holding hands with Keith Urban,” says one guest. “At one point it seemed that they were going to run into each other, but they somehow avoided it.” Not that Tomkat (or anybody else) seemed to want to spoil the mother of all date nights. Says the guest: “Tom and Katie seemed very happy together and cute.”
