As savvy about his targeted audience as are the companies he attacks, he fills this book geared for 11- to 15-year-olds with eeww-inspiring facts. Did you know that ground-up bugs can be used to tint candy? That burgers often contain poop? Chew explains the economic, employment and health consequences of our reliance on junk food while giving kids a sense of their own power—spotlighting students like the Glennallen, Alaska, girl who got her school to ban its soda machine. In part to counter anticipated negative publicity, McDonald’s—Schlosser’s nemesis—is promoting its newest healthy-menu options. If kids (and their parents) take to this engrossing, illuminating exposé, McBroccoli could be next.
