New Joc City

Thanks to his Jeep-rocking debut single “It’s Goin’ Down,” which hit No. 1 on the R&B and rap charts, things are going nowhere but up for Yung Joc. On his first CD, which takes its title from the 1991 gangster film New Jack City, he emerges as the latest talent from the booming Atlanta hip-hop scene. With his distinctive drawl and a laid-back delivery that sometimes brings to mind a southern 50 Cent, Joc commands the mic while doing the usual: beefing up his own ego, ripping into the competition and macking the ladies. He turns reflective, though, with the closer “Picture Perfect,” on which he deglamorizes the gangsta life. [STARS 2.5]
