From the Plantation to the Penitentiary
REVIEWED BY V.R. PETERSON

JAZZ

The music swings, Wynton sings—and he even raps (on “Where Y’all At?”), sounding like a Last Poets-Common hybrid. This is not your usual Marsalis disc. The tunes, steeped in blues and Ellingtonia, offer Coltrane-esque solos. Some beats emulate Motown while an agitated Marsalis turns social critic, commenting on hip-hop misogyny (“Love and Broken Hearts”) and greed (“Supercapitalism”). Though this new Wynton may not be for everyone, his outrage never eclipses his musicianship.
