Jane Curtin and Stephen Collins are two grizzled veterans of the dating wars warily starting a relationship. Both are divorced and have matching best friends (hers: Mary Beth Hurt; his: Stan Garrison) to whom they confide their hopes and fears.

The pilot mixes an unusual (for TV) amount of emotional content in with the gags. It’s Garrison, late of Married…With Children, who gets the funniest lines amid the often too-cute repartee: “It’s not like I take classes to meet women. A lot of guys do that, but not me. I’ve always gone just for the classes.” “You are a true scholar.”

While Curtin’s bruised but tart manner wears well, Collins’s is namby-pamby. He’s a three-time series loser, and this brittle sitcom doesn’t look to be the remedy for him. Eventually Working It Out will move into a regular slot on Saturdays at 8:30 P.M.
