Jessica Andrews (DreamWorks)
At 17, Jessica Andrews is no Patsy Cline or Emmylou Harris, but she is at least as strong a singer as Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. And it’s refreshing to hear a teen not yet traumatized by unrequited love, one still willing to sing (in the title song), “When the day is done, my mama’s still my biggest fan.” Yet listeners with a taste for premature mush can indulge their sweet tooth with the romantic “Helplessly, Hopelessly.” Even so, Andrews does seem quite a bit more in control on this second album than she did on her first.
Maybe she picked up pointers on how to sell a song during her recent series of concert tours with Faith Hill and Trisha Yearwood. Andrews, like her country contemporary LeAnn Rimes, is a true talent who is likely to remain as visible at 27 as she is at 17.
Bottom Line: Youth will be served
