Whether she’s playing Larry David’s neighbor on Curb Your Enthusiasm or contributing offbeat reports to HBO’s Inside the NFL, Wanda Sykes makes an impression with her impudent humor. She’s ready for her own series. Too bad it’s this one.

This jerry-built sitcom (premiering March 26) casts Sykes as a struggling stand-up comedian hired as a correspondent on a local news program in Washington, D.C. She clashes with an egotistical anchorman (Phil Morris), but naturally there’s some sexual tension in the air. Her apartment is a second home to her nephew, niece and widowed sister-in-law (Tammy Lauren), so the family bases are covered. It’s standard stuff except for an extra measure of vulgarity. There’s nothing funny here but Sykes’s brief commentaries on issues such as gun control and slavery reparations.

BOTTOM LINE: No big deal
