These Days
REVIEWED BY RALPH NOVAK

CRITIC’S CHOICE

COUNTRY

A four-disc set of new material would surely amount to an exercise in excess for most any performer, but Vince Gill boasts the artistry to match his audacious ambition on These Days. Writing or cowriting all 43 songs, Gill displays remarkable versatility, stretching out from country and bluegrass to rock, pop, jazz and gospel. Along the way he gets help from an all-star array of guests, including Sheryl Crow, Diana Krall, Bonnie Raitt and Gretchen Wilson, not to mention wife Amy Grant. But Gill—who gets to show off his underrated guitar playing as well as his strikingly clear and true tenor—remains at the core of it all. Fully appreciating this work entails an investment of time, but you will be amply rewarded with days and days of listening pleasure.
