Once a member of the Mamas and the Papas, Michelle Phillips (PEOPLE, Nov. 14) has scored big on the big screen (Valentino) and small (Aspen). But she has seen better days as a recording artist. This is her first album since the group broke up in 1968, and the feel is of that era. Songs like Baby As You Turn Away and Aching Kind are harmless attempts at recapturing those California Dreamin’ days. Michelle’s voice can be sensuous at times, and it comes across best on Trashy Rumors—but that’s not enough to rekindle this Mama’s musical magic.
