It’s been a summer of lemons for Hollywood, but surprisingly, this vehicle is not among them. While it may not soar to the comic heights of Airplane!, the raunchy laughs click along with the regularity of highway markers. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, who created the underappreciated I Wanna Hold Your Hand in 1978, wrote this screwy screenplay, and Zemeckis directed with a free hand. The story bears about as much scrutiny as most of the so-called automobiles being peddled in the movie, but it revolves loosely around the rivalry between two used car dealers, Kurt (Elvis) Russell and Jack Warden. Russell is a convincing con man, as well as an engaging actor, and Warden adds another blustery triumph to his impressive list of credits. You’d be crazy to buy a used car from either one of these hucksters, but their pitch is irresistible. (R)
