by Nat Dallinger

Dallinger was one of the first Hollywood paparazzi, and this collection of pictures is full of silly, posed and irresistible shots of Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant and their contemporaries. We see Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy, with their three children, Clint Eastwood wrestling with Doug McClure, Liz cooking with her mother, Judy Garland with a 4-year-old Liza Minnelli, Kirk Douglas shaving while son Michael imitates him. Dallinger’s text, unfortunately, is a poor accompaniment to his pictures. Of Lana Turner and boyfriend Johnny Stompanato, Dallinger writes, “His somewhat mysterious death in the house of the actress ended that romantic association.” (Lana’s daughter, Cheryl, stabbed him, of course, but a jury decided it was justified homicide.) “The Miami-born [Sidney] Poitier’s screen performances,” we are informed, “have all been of award-winning quality.” That’s OK, Nat; the pictures are still a lot of fun.
