MTV (Wednesdays, 10:30 p.m. ET)

Okay, so I had to look up what “Two-a-Days” meant (for my fellow sports dummies out there, it means twice-daily practices). This eight-part series covers the brutal world of high school football in Hoover, Ala. How brutal? Throwing-up-on-the-field brutal. Mean coaches, pushy parents, tough teammates all fighting for college scholarships—this is no rich-kid party like Laguna Beach. Of course, being an MTV production, the series does spend too much time creating a soap-opera subplot out of a jealous girlfriend’s suspicions. (It otherwise avoids reality-show clichés.) Still, other than the obscure title, this surprisingly gripping series scores.
