by Dick Francis

A wealthy British steeplechase rider and amateur detective is asked by a prince, no less, to find out why the prince’s brother-in-law has been warned not to ride in the Moscow Olympics. The steeplechaser goes to Russia and ingratiates himself with the Soviets’ horsey set. Then he uncovers an elaborate plot by a terrorist group. For fans of Francis’ mysteries, one need only say that this is as good as his best. For newcomers, it’s never too late. Trial Run is a fine way to begin a happy addiction. Ex-jockey Francis has written 18 previous thrillers. (Harper & Row, $8.95)
