Picks and Pans Review: Tori Amos Unplugged
MTV (Tues., June 25, 9 p.m. ET)
When MTV debuted Unplugged in 1990, we got to see if rock stars could actually play. Over time the performances have become bloated, with too many backup musicians helping to hide the stars’ shortcomings. Not here. Joined only by a guitarist, Amos lives up to her reputation as the world’s most sensuous pianist. Though her voice is basically a rasp and her minor-key songs sound like The Exorcist theme, the sulky, gyrating chanteuse puts on quite a show, ultimately turning her piano bench into a kind of onstage sex prop.
