Blythe Danner and Michael Moriarty are marvelous as the suburban Maples, a couple whose marital chiaroscuro John Updike has sketched (and to some extent lived) in 17 short stories since 1956. The most successful scenes of this absorbing adaptation involve mundane moments of tenderness and concern—even as the marriage, like Updike’s, dissolves.
