Louis (Roots) Gossett Jr. stars as an activist who returns to his native Alabama following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and unexpectedly is elected sheriff. Based loosely on the life of Sheriff Thomas Gilmore of Greene County, Ala., the movie is well acted by Gossett and Helen Martin as an elderly black trying to vote, among others, but its sentimentality strains belief.
