Produced under various imprints since 1868, the World Almanac is a fact-seeker’s savior. It’s readable, wide-ranging and, perhaps most important, well indexed. “Molybdenum resources, world,” is listed along with “Mottoes of states,” “Oil spills” and the rather more sweeping “Philosophy.” While the Olympic section is somewhat skimpy for a year when the Games are being held, there is a new section of consumer information and a poll among newspaper editors on “America’s 25 Most Influential Women.” Justice Sandra Day O’Connor finished first for the second year in a row. (Newspaper Enterprise Association, paper, $4.95)
