Remy Shand (Motown)

Album of the week

Motown means soul—from whatever generation. The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Boyz II Men and India.Arié have all called the label home. Which explains why Motown’s latest discovery is…a white guy from Winnipeg, Man.? Yup, meet Remy Shand, whose creamy falsetto and old-school R&B stylings recall Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye in their heydays.

Shand, 24, wrote and produced his entire debut album, played almost all the instruments (including a mean wah-wah guitar) and—critical in his chosen profession and genre—has already mastered the smooth mid-tempo come-on. His lush, laid-back arrangements on “The Second One” and the intoxicating single “Take a Message” are among this disc’s many subtle pleasures.

Bottom Line: Savor a sip of Remy
