It would be difficult to overstate the importance of this 38-record collection, which makes available some heretofore unheard cuts by both heralded and obscure artists. The gemstone of the series is Charlie Parker’s Bird/ The Savoy Recordings (Master Takes). It is the most successful jazz reissue in history, and the biggest album Bird ever made—22 years after his premature death. The jazz range includes superb collections of Coltrane, Lester Young, Fats Navarro—all assembled in perfect recording and packaging taste under the direction of series producer Bob Porter. No less appealing is Savoy’s latest double-offering from the series, The Roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll, which features some of the richest R&B to be found anywhere.
