The legend began about 270 years after Christ’s birth. The name then was Nicholas. He was Sinterklaas to Dutch settlers in 17th-century Manhattan, and Santa Claus by 1823. The old engravings and documents in this paperback are delightful and should inspire a few ho ho ho’s during the holiday season. (Walker, $6.95)
