Mickey Newbury

There are no boats and no waves in The Sailor, but Newbury does seem at sea among the syrupy strings. A Texas-born singer-composer (and crony of the Willie Nelson-Waylon Jennings crowd) who picked his way to Nashville more than a decade ago, he never quite gets unstuck from his gooey orchestral arrangements. In Blue Sky Shinin’, the track that’s getting some C&W air play, Newbury seems to be impersonating Andy Williams with a Dallas drawl. If he is, the ploy doesn’t work; the album is still a mickey.
