Picks and Pans Review: The Return of Sam Mccloud
CBS (Sun., Nov. 12, 9 P.M. ET)
Dennis Weaver is back as McCloud, but this time as a lawmaker rather than a lawman. (In the original 1970-77 series, he played a Taos, N.Mex., cop working in New York City in an exchange program.)
We meet the rookie legislator on the floor of the U.S. Senate, ramming through an ecology bill with an impassioned speech that earns him a standing ovation from his fellow politicos (yeah, right). From Washington he shoots over to England to look into the death of his niece at the hands of a vicious multinational drug conglomerate and gets caught up in controversial cancer research. Busy, busy, busy. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
McCloud series regulars Terry Carter, Diana Muldaur and J.D. Cannon re-enlist and are joined by David McCallum, Roger Rees and Patrick MacNee, but none of them can help this shoddy, implausible mess. The entire premise of McCloud has always been based on a man resourcefully functioning outside his element. This time the craggy cowboy is just unhorsed.
