The title hints that this documentary’s producers don’t think the real Patsy emerged in Sweet Dreams, the 1985 Jessica Lange film. But little new light is shed in their sentimental biography about the country singer who died in a 1963 plane crash at the peak of her popularity. One hopes her friends (such as country performers Mel Tillis, Dottie West and Loretta Lynn) have better stories to tell than the good-old-gal yarns they spin here. We also could have done without the plane crash reenactment.
The producers at least have the sense to cram in generous portions of Cline’s music, including “I Fall to Pieces,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Crazy,” “She’s Got You” and “Sweet Dreams.” However you feel about this program it’s hard not to fall in love with Cline’s haunting voice.
