This detective story, written in the style of 16th-century England, is vividly evocative of its era and marvelously readable. A small troupe of players arrives in a hamlet to perform for the local gentry. After their first week in town, the boy who plays the women’s roles is murdered. A marvelously self-contained tailor named Matthew Stock moonlights as the constable and in pursuing the murderer uncovers all kinds of illicit sex in places high and low. Tourney teaches English at the University of Tulsa, and here’s hoping he gives Stock another case to solve. (Harper & Row, $10.95)
