HOW SHE GOT INTO ACTING
I was 14, standing on a street corner, and a model scout asked to take my photo.
HER FIRST BIG ROLE
The Bill Engvall Show. I loved that sitcom, and it funded my indie career, but it didn’t do as much exposure-wise as Winter’s Bone.
GETTING CAST AS AN OZARKS TEEN IN WINTER’S BONE
I auditioned in L.A. and they said I didn’t have the right look. Then, like a psychopath, I followed them to New York on the red-eye and showed up the next day at the casting there. Not brushing my hair or washing my face did the trick.
SHOOTING THE SQUIRREL-SKINNING SCENE
That was awful. Every time they called “Cut” I started shrieking.
HER NEXT MOVIE
The Beaver [with Mel Gibson]. It throws you into this really weird world—that’s what I fell in love with in the script. [She’s also in June’s X-Men: First Class as Mystique.]
HOW SHE’S GETTING READY FOR OSCAR
I’m not really doing anything special. It’s just one night, one very, very exciting night. I should probably start looking for a dress!
