by Elizabeth Fishel

Thanks to her graceful writing and a willingness to reveal herself, Fishel, an Oakland-based freelance writer, has created a striking, touching book about women’s relationships with their fathers, husbands, brothers, mentors and sons. She interviewed other women to get their perspectives, but it is her understanding of her own concerns that is impressive. “In the most vivid dream I’ve ever had about my father,” she writes, “he was in a room with every other man I had ever known in my life—including my sons. Each of them had come to see me, but found they so very much enjoyed one another’s company that they became a group that excluded me—and left.” (Morrow, $15.95)
