Maria Bello, Hugh Dancy, Emily Blunt, Amy Brenneman, Kathy Baker| PG-13 |
Five women and a man form a book club devoted to discussing the novels of Jane Austen and, over the course of six months, their romantic lives begin paralleling those of Austen’s characters (including happy endings for all). And that’s pretty much the whole crumpet in this endearing—if slightly syrupy—romantic drama. Because they have the juiciest roles, Bello, as a loner who thinks she’s happy that way, and Brenneman, as a woman dumped by her husband (Jimmy Smits), come off best. Is Club better than an Austen novel? Nope—but it’s significantly shorter and still manages to pack in plenty of sense and sensibility.
