by Lawrence S. Ritter

This is an expanded edition of the admirable 1966 book in which Ritter, a professor of finance at New York University, tracked down old ballplayers, who spoke about what the game was like 70, 80 and 90 years ago. The new entries include Tiger great Hank Greenberg, Babe Herman and Specs Toporcer, the first major league infielder to wear glasses. This was the best baseball book published in 1966, it is the best baseball book of its kind now, and, if it is reissued in 10 years, it will be the best baseball book of 1995. (Morrow, $15.95)
