ABC has taped 80 to 90 of its beloved “Up Close and Personal” reports on athletes—almost always entertaining and interesting. But not all of them will make it to the air, since most Soviet bloc athletes are staying home. ABC is also proud of its high-tech gadgets that will improve coverage of some events this year: an electric van that tracks the marathon without asphyxiating the runners; a boat with no-wake engines and a gyroscopically steadied camera for rowing and canoeing; a remote-control “skycam” suspended on cables above the track and field stadium for some odd angles; and underwater windows and frogmen for swimming and diving.
